I am proud!

Last night was first grade open house for the parents.  The kids have been in school for about 3 weeks.  Oddly, in my daughters class of 20, only 3 other parents showed up.  While the teacher was giving her chapel, I was reading over what they would learn this year.  My mind immediately went to dread as I recognized that Ashli knows almost everything on the list.  I stuck around to talk to the teacher about the behavior chart (Ashli has been getting yellows instead of greens) and the teacher wanted to talk to me as well.  She said not to worry about the yellows as it is a five color system and those are just warnings for things like talking an so forth.  She then told me that Ashli is reading at a 3rd grade level.  As the school is only K-1 the classroom and the library are not really stocked with books to challenge her.  She said she was going to go borrow books from the other school and that Ashli was going to start the Accelerated Reader program immediatly instead of after winter break with everyone else.  I was trying to hold back beeming with pride, but I think it is great.  They are also going to test her for the gifted program.  We are still going to work with her on reading but I think we should concetrate on other subjects to let her advance in those as well.

I don't mean to brag on my child, but yes I do.

Sci-Fi kids are just smarter. Fact.

There's nothing wrong with being proud of your child for being intelligent. :-) Just don't be one of those parents that rule with an iron fist. She may be a smart kid but she's still a kid.

We don't. She gets to do fun stuff like Tae Kwon Do and Violin lessons. We also take her to Pokemon hobby league once a month.

Experience leads me to believe that is true. We should apply for a government grant to do a study though.

maybe she's talking too much because she's so bored! uhm... okay. so there's green and yellow? i'm assuming that a third color would be red... what are the other 2 colors? that doesn't make any sense at all!also, i wonder why only a few parents showed? i'll bet their kids aren't gonna get tested for the gifted classes. ;P hehe.

yeah, I think the parents that cared were there. There may be some random parents that were working or had scheduling conflicts but not all 16. The reason 5% of Americans can't find the U.S. on a map is because their parents don't care. The teacher said that last year a couple of kids were missing 2-3 days a week, every week.

whoa. that's really sad. man, my parents wouldn't let me miss a day of school! that's crazy that parents just don't care about the education of their children anymore.

You should brag on your child. She is a reflection of the good parent you are. When she acts up it is because they have not yet reached where she currently is and she needs more. I always acted up because I was bored shitless and the stuff we were doing was stuff that I had already done. Isn't it amazing that only three showed up? You would think that nothing could be more important. I am not surprised you showed up. The rest of the kids only stand half a chance. Don't be ashamed to be proud. I think you will be proud for some time to come.

Congrats on your bright child! You deserve to be proud of her :-)I agree with the bored comments. I read books during my classes. I got in trouble for it with the teachers. My parents came and talked to them with me, and I was asked why I was reading. I said, "I already know this stuff. Why can't I read if I'm not learning anything?" The teachers agreed that it was better I learn than goof off or talk and distract others, but were afraid that my behavior would rub off on others who needed to learn the lessons. I can't remember, but I think I had to end up sneaking the books in after that, but continued through high school with this behavior...
