Here is a symptom. Employee fired for detaining shoplifter stealing $1600 worth of merchandise. To add insult to injury, they suspened him for a whole month before letting him know he was fired.
Sure, employees stopping shoplifters would raise liability insurance costs, but stolen merchandise doesn't just get absorbed. That price gets passed on to the consumer and insurance prices still go up.
Oh, and the bullies that drove Phoebe Prince to kill herself get off with slaps on the wrist. Nothing has changed at the school either.
No one has an ethical code. Note, I did not say my ethical code. It isn't that others have different codes, but a larger portion don't have any ethics at all. People tend to do what is safe or what is easy instead of what is right. People are told by society and by their employers to look the other way.
Adopt a code of honor and try to live by it. It could be something as simple as the Golden Rule. Half the kids in school today probably don't even know what that is. A majority of people don't even come close to living it, hence dancing in the street at the news of another human's death.
Are we going to become noble once more or are we going encourage the fall of our own empire.

I agree - too many folks take the easy road rather than the "right" road.
Well said.
I have a code! I have a code!
Good point, by the way. Ironic that in a corporate world full of mission statements, so many people lack a code.
Jen- I bet the killers in your books have codes.
Lightening-You indeed have a code, thanks for answering my questions.
