My Evil Genius


I will be modest and call myself merely a person with a higher IQ (this is to be read as I think entirely too much of myself). But I think my daughter is a genius. I must help her to harness the powers for good though. Right now, she is using them for evil. If she gets the genius gene from me, the evil gene has to be from her mother, right? Onto the story.

My wife is making out a list of things for me to pick up at the grocery store. She gives me the list and I take my oldest along for the ride. In the car, she says don't forget the doughnuts. I state that I am sure there are no doughnuts on the list. She counters that there are. I pull out the list and there is complete column going all the way down the paper and then in a second column, all by itself and in my wife's handwriting, I see doughnuts. Wow, it is on the list. So, I buy doughnuts. Later that night my wife scolds me for buying doughnuts, stating they were not on the list. I take out the paper and show her that they are.

Turns out that my sneaky 5 year old asked my wife how to spell doughnuts. After my wife spelled it, my daughter asked her to write it down. This is taking place while my wife is making the grocery list. To the side of where my wife is making the list she writes it down. I won't mention that she misspelled it donuts. So you see my dilemma. I have an evil genius as a daughter. Did I mention that she loves Lex Luther and routes for Jaws in the Jaws movies.

  4. And, while we're on the subject, did you see the Oscar-winning movie(s)? What did you think? Yes, they were enjoyable. They seemed to capture the most important aspects in each movie. They threw alot of detail in that only readers would pick up on. I think Peter Jackson did the books justice. One of the best adaptations I have seen.

Brave Men Run

Finished listening to this today. It is self described as what would happen if John Hughes (Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club, etc.) wrote comic books. The story is set in the 1980's and follows Nate Charters as a group of people with superhuman abilities (sovereigns) make themselves known to the public at large. Nate has some abilities of his own.

Unlike most stories with super powered people, Brave Men Run doesn't have the whole costume and now that I have powers I have to be the most noble person crap that you get a lot of times. Brave Men Run shows teenage rebellion and character interaction that is realistic. The characters' abilities are more part of the conflict that drives the character to the action instead of being the action themselves.

This is a surprisingly good book that is offered for free on Podiobooks.com. The writer, Matthew Wayne Selznick also offers print and E copies on his website for those people who don't do podcasts or audio books.

Highly recommended.

Memoirs, but not really



I watched the movie incarnation of Memoirs of a Geisha, and I was, of course, disappointed. When will I learn that I shouldn't watch movies made from books that I really like?
Unfortunately, I can't remove myself from the book for this review. The book was too beautiful and the movie tramped on that. The movie makes the geisha out to be prostitutes. The movie also misses key points and does not emphasize what it was to actually be a geisha. Golden researched everything about the book to make sure that he had the details right, and then stood by as they messed all of it up in the movie.
Zhang Zi yi was too old and so was Michelle Yeoh. The set was beautiful, and the contacts in Zhang's eyes made her breathtaking. The spring festival dance was horribly choreographed. It looked like Taylor Hicks did all of the dance steps. She truly looked like she was having a seizure.
I realize the restrictions in converting a book to a movie. There is not enough time to convey 200+pages into a 2 hour movie and some things have to drop. That was near impossible to do in this case. To take something completely foreign and try and bring the American audience up to speed in the little amount of time given, is very hard to do. This was simply too much book for one movie and it wasn't a movie you could serialize. I would rather have no movie than a bad one though.
My only hope is that someone sees the movie and picks up the book. That is the only good that could come of this atrocity.

Rain in the Forecast

*Below is a short story I wrote. I have posted this before, but that was before anyone actually read my blog. Feedback would be appreciated. This story has been rejected twice. I have made some corrections and added a bit since that time. Enjoy!"

Mist flows down from the trees forming a virtual curtain across the landscape. Dex limps through the woods with purpose and determination driving him forward at more of a controlled fall than a walk. His foot squishes in and out of his blood soaked shoe. He is unaware of how long he has been running and is barely aware of the pain that is no longer shooting up his leg. Dex looks back to see if they are still behind him and immediately loses balance and crashes into the ground. Luckily for him, there is a large rock that cushions his head as he falls.
The hunger is what finally wakes him up. His stomach is in knots and his head is still spinning. Be it from the loss of blood or concussion he isn’t sure. His first instinct is to run again, but his leg protests with intense pain. It has been a few hours judging by the darkness and they have not found him yet. Maybe they have given up; maybe it is just a matter of time. Either way he has to keep moving. He can’t think about the pain, hunger, or loss . . . the loss. Oh, Brittany, he sobs almost under his breath as he drags himself to his feet. For the first time he looks down to check his leg. A hole about one inch in diameter is on either side of his inner thigh. Fresh blood is now oozing onto the crusted pants leg. He takes off his shirt and ties it onto the wound and starts limping away.
The sense of urgency from before he fell is gone. His sense of security and slow pace allow him to think. They had just wanted to see the planes coming in and out. It was his idea. The only reason that Brittany agreed to come at all was the picnic and that it seemed really romantic. Lizzie and Jake had come too. It was all his fault and he was the only one left. Their blood is on his hands. The thought of it makes him want to give up.
He had been out the airstrip plenty of times. He had always dreamed of being a pilot even though he had never taken steps to make that dream come true. Dex considered himself an airplane enthusiast. That enthusiasm had cost everyone but him their lives. When that strange and silent plane had come down, Dex just had to leave the tree line run down the fence to get a closer look. Brittany had followed and Lizzie and Jake stayed. By the fence they had come into the light, but all that concerned Dex was that sleek ship in front of him. It had absolutely no lines and looked like something out of a movie. He realized he probably shouldn’t be seeing this as a flood light pointed directly towards him. A split second later some kind of soldiers, they weren’t wearing any uniform he was familiar with, came running towards them. There were two of them, and Dex did the only logical thing. He grabbed Brittany’s hand and started running.
Lizzie and Jake had been paying more attention to each other than anything going on around them and did not hear Dex and Brittany approach. “Get up,” Dex yelled when they were within sight. “We got to get out of here now.” Jake didn’t quite get the urgency until he saw the soldiers too. He fell in behind Dex and hit the ground before he got under the cover of the tree line. There was no sound or gunshot, just Jake lying there motionless and the sickening sigh of air escaping his lungs. Dex got in between the girls and where the soldiers would be coming in to the woods. Dex pushed the girls on the path towards his car ahead of himself. The woods provided sufficient cover to keep their pursuers from getting a clear shot. Dex allowed himself to relax as they broke from the tree line and started cresting the hill where the car was parked. He stopped and looked back towards the tree line. As he turned back towards the car, the girls fell back down towards him. Dex heard the soldiers from the other side of the hill shouting confirmation that he had a hit. Dex turned back and sprinted towards the woods when he felt the sting in his thigh.
“My fault,” Dex murmurs as he falls and catches himself against a tree. He reaches up to wipe the sweat out of his eyes and feels his fever. He is getting dizzier and more disoriented by the moment. He has to sit down and rest; there is no way around it. Still, he pushes on. The ghosts of his friends drive him until not even memories of Brittany can offer enough strength to keep Dex on his feet. Dex collapses to the forest floor, sending leaves swirling about his body. He drags himself to the base of a large oak tree. As he leans back against a oak he closes his eyes.

“Channel 3 news; news you can count on!”
“Disturbing news tonight as 4 teenagers are robbed and murdered outside of a truck-stop on interstate 4. The four were apparently parked behind the store when they were accosted. Police have not released the names of the victims pending notification of their parents. There were no cameras at the rear of the store and police do not have a suspect. If you have any information, please contact the Crimestoppers Hotline at 555-1337. In other news there may be rain in our forecast . . .”

For the Cause



*Just East of Nashville, my home, is a town called Lebanon.*

Hy Perboly reporting here Live from Lebanon for Action News. At about 10:15 last night the Greater Nashville Jewish Community (GNJC) started laying siege to Lebanon. The conflict was started when other news organizations irresponsibly reported that Hezbollah held control in south Lebanon. I am pretty sure that they mean the Lebanon in the middle east and not in middle Tennessee, but I am unsure if the GNJC is aware of this. Here is a young man, I will ask him.
"Excuse me, can I talk to you? My name is Hy Perboly from Action News."
"Sure."
"And what is your name, sir?"
"Gold Silverman."
"Why are you attacking Lebanon, Tennessee instead of Lebanon in the Middle East?"
"It is symbolic, I don't have the time to fly over to Israel and enlist in the army and train for a few months. Plus there are some guys here that fly confederate flags, and we all know that the confederate flag was used by both the Nazi's and slave traders that dealt in Jewish slaves. I think Ramses was the inventor of the confederate flag."
"There you have it. The birthplace of Cracker Barrel restaurant has become a powder keg of racial tension." This is Hy Perboly signing off.

Worty Dirds



I know I am in the minority here.  I do not cuss and I do not enjoy it when are president lets one slip either.  But, that is not the topic of my rant today.  My topic will be cussing and women.

I was in the Army for four years, so I have heard anything that can be said anyway it can be said.  I do not have virgin ears.  Maybe I am old fashioned, but I do not like to hear women cuss.  It seems wrong on the basest levels.  Maybe I have the misogynistic view that women are dainty little pretty things and should not be soiled with such dirty language.  It could be that I don't cuss myself and see it as an inferior form of communication.  Either way, something in me cringes when ever a girl/woman cusses. 

In my dating days, I could be talking to a girl and be completely turned off by her use of language.  To this day it makes women, who would otherwise be smoking hot, seem unattractive to me.  In recent years it seems that the problem has worsened.  Girls think they need to be as bad as boys and pepper their language with expletives.  To me the ultimate turn off and heart breaker is for a girl to drop the f bomb.  This can be excused in times of extreme emotion sometimes.  But today, women throw the word around as casually as men and use it in ways that romance novels should have taught them how to say it prettier. 

Women, please don't sully your mouths with these foul words.  You can still be strong and independent and not talk like a bunch of horny sailors.  Do not stoop to the level of men but raise yourself above it.  Being well spoken has never cost anyone a job or a friend.  So, fire up those dictionaries and sound as pretty as you look.

The weekend

So I went to Mobile, AL on Friday and came home on Sunday.  Thankfully I had the IPOD going the whole time with podiobooks and podcast.  Music has a tendency to get old after several hours.  The trip was made easier with the lack of family.  I only had to stop for gas.  I used the restroom and refueled myself at those times. 

My brother was there and I was able to visit with my Grandpa.  I saw my mom after her self imposed 10 year exile.  That was nice.  My brother and I surprised her on Saturday afternoon.  My visit with her went better than I expected it to.  Then on Sunday morning, bright and early, headed home.  My brother was going home at noon. 

It was nice visiting with everyone, but I was ready to come home.  This was the first time I had been away from my wife and children for more than a night.

Friends


*I will be away from the computer until Monday, so no updates.

My wife is finding it hard to make friends.  She blames it on American's being un-accepting of a foreigner.  She states that America is no longer a melting pot, but a salad bowl.  She doesn't get along well with her co workers.

Thinking about the issue, I decided that I don't really have many friends either.  I mean, I have people at work that I get along with and like and could hang out with in a non-work type atmosphere, but I don't have anyone that I call on a regular basis or go over and visit with.  I do have some friends, but I rarely see them and it is almost a struggle to get together because of life getting in the way.  The friends I do have are friends of each other and we all have common interests.  When we do get together it tends to be as a group where wives and girlfriends are welcome, if not invited. 

Does life, marriage, and kids separate you from old friends and prevent you from making new friends?  Is it a sign that I am devoted to my family that I have limited relationships with my present and former friends.  I remember my parents having friends and doing the whole hanging out thing, but I didn't exactly have the best parents.  Are computers or technology responsible in some way?  I see all of these people on cell phones and wonder who they are talking too. 

One last question.  Is this period of separation temporary until my kids grow older and become more independent?  I should have more time at this point to do things I want with people that I like. 

In an effort to keep contact with my friends I do have my book club.  This gets most of us together at least once a month.  I thought that this would be a great way to make new friends as well, but I think potential new members are put off by the close knitted ness of the group.  I have also been in clubs that grew and fractured because of the growth.

Elmyra


If you have ever seen Tiny Toon Adventures (we're tiny we're tooney, we're all a little looney, and during this cartooney, we're invading your TV.), then you know who Elmyra is. For those of you that have not seen the show, Elmyra is little girl whose repeated line is "oh a (insert furry animal here), I want to hug you, and squeeze you, and love you. . ." She then proceeds to do just that. She also dresses them up and never puts them down. Yes captivity. Now that you know the character meet my oldest daughter Ashli. She is Elmyra incarnate.

QotD: No shouting on the bus!

What was your most memorable or favorite school field trip?

We went to see the Gengis Khan exhibit when I was a senior.  It was Gengis Khan, perpetuator of senseless violence.  I am a huge fan.  On the bus ride back, I fell asleep.  I freaked everyone out because my eyes were not closed, but you could only see the whites of my eyes.  I seem to have passed this trait on to my own children.  I think it is cute.  "Look honey, Ashli is possessed again.  Awwww!"

Super Heroes

Thanks to Damien for the inspiration.

Superheroes, what would they be like if they existed?  Do comics and movies really represent human nature?  I don't think they do.

If people with superpowers were to exist they would cross the spectrum of personalities.  There would be the odd noble person and the odd super villian, but most people would exploit their powers for their own gains.  To be fair, comics and movies have explored this with some detail, but they have a tendency to show way to many characters from the extremes of the spectrum.  There would be a Bell curve, and Bell curves dictate that the majority would fall in the center.

If I could fly, I would.  I don't know if this would cause me to fight crime or save lives.  It would just give me the ability to fly. 

If I were super strong, I would make my money in sports.  Being superstrong does not make me bulletproof or anything like that.  If I had the opportunity to do something great, sure, but I would not go looking for trouble.

If I could turn invisable, I would at some point in time venture into a girl's locker room.  Hey, I am being honest.  I would also be the best ever super spy.  Or possibly make money on the stock market.

Most men are pragmatist, and if they woke up one day with superhuman abilities they would continue being pragmatist and use their abilities to their own advantages.  It is the human condition that everyone would do something unethical at some point with their powers.  We are not from Krypton.

There is a Reason

A salute goes out to all the supermen and women of our military.


When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

An Early Vacation

I wake up late this morning. I am off tomorrow. I call in for a long
weekend. I try several different people. Looks like they all called
in as well. Maybe they should have just given us both days off.

Best. Fireworks. Ever.

The best fireworks display I have ever seen was the time that I got to set off a claymore, or the time I got to fire live grenades from a M203 grenade launcher. Maybe they weren't as colorful, but they sure were cool.
